The Savage has some fuel delivery quirks. I've never trusted the design of the vacuum petcock. Next time it won't idle, try removing the gas cap and turning the fuel petcock to the prime position. When I was riding the bike full time during the heat of summer, I would have to ride hope without the gas cap on because the tank would vacuum lock. God luck and keep us posted.
